Forget TAM and GAM! The guys sit down with the newest member of the ETR family -- that'd be Cam Wiebe -- to break down expansion news, talk transfers, and chat with USMNT starlet Kellyn Acosta about his WhatsApp buddies Christian Pulisic & Weston McKinnie, his future plans and FC Dallas heading into 2018. |

Thu, 14 December 2017
Either the internet has eroded our attention spans past the point of recognition, or there was just that much massive news in Major League Soccer this week. Maybe both. Not even a week ago, Toronto FC were winning MLS Cup and claiming best-ever status. Now? It's all Darlington Nagbe to ATLUTD, LAFC's ever-growing roster and silly season in full swing.
Nagbe to the South could be the biggest MLS trade yet, and the guys dive in to provide analysis from top to bottom to give you the lowdown on the Five Stripe's big gamble and Portland's big payday. Then ATLUTD president Darren Eales calls in to talk Nagbe, those Ezequiel Barco rumors and Arthur Blank's desire to push the on-field envelope.
Silly season got, well, even sillier in a matter of days. LAFC sign Uruguayan starlet Diego Rossi to a DP deal, those Sacha Kljestan rumors won't go away and the newest club in MLS grabbed five new players (and traded two) in the Expansion Draft. And that's just the beginning. Praise be to Panterita! The Dynamo locked up Alberth Elis. Plus, NYCFC and Sporting KC are making moves and making trades, the LA Galaxy have a new centerback and there are so many rumors that you won't be able to keep up.
In the mailbag, a new Hot-Take Hotline theme straight from the 70s, the guys realize their reading comprehension is lacking and wonder which players might have Twitter burner accounts a la Kevin Durant. Remember, you can call or text the show at 401-206-0MLS! |

Best ever? Toronto FC lay claim after MLS Cup triumph + TAM injection, trades galore, free agency and the expansion draft
Toronto FC are your 2017 MLS Cup Champions! The guys crown the Reds as the best team in MLS history – feel free to disagree via the Hot-Take Hotline – while trying to understand why Seattle took so long to adjust to Greg Vanney’s tactical switch. The result also proves the ETR curse lives on after five hosts picked the Sounders to repeat. Plus, don’t miss an opportunity to bask in the glory that is Jozy Altidore’s speech from the championship parade. Of course, there’s no rest for the weary as the MLS offseason gets off to a flying start with a half-day trade window that can only be described as “lit,” TAM Injection tours all 23 league markets, the free agent list comes out and the Expansion Draft gets set for Tuesday. What do Kei Kamara and Walker Zimmerman bring to their new teams? Are there handshake deals going down between ATLUTD and the new boys? Which free agents are getting wined and dined? In the mailbag, Doyle and Ben give a bandwagon fan the business, then turn the heat up on themselves. Remember, you can call or text the show at 401-206-0MLS! |

It's 2017 MLS Cup Week! Wiebe returns from baby duty a changed man, but the convo on the pod is all about the big championship rematch. What legacies are set to be cemented, created or destroyed when Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders meet on Saturday (4 pm ET; ESPN, UniMás in US | TSN, TVAS in Canada)? Also, can TFC return to the all-time form they showed midseason or will they keep their Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs form going and grind a win out against the Sounders? And what would back-to-back titles mean for Seattle? In the second segment, the guys shower some praise on 2017 Landon Donovan MLS MVP winner Diego Valeri and explain why it was never really a discussion about who would take home the award. Of course, there is also plenty of time to quibble about some of the voters' decisions. They also take a look at the latest MLS rumors and reports as silly season begins. Some competition to the show could also be on the way as Jermaine Jones announces his own radio show! That ought to be fun. Plus, Ben Baerantees an MLS Cup pick that doubles as a troll move, and Wiebe divulges a little too much about his life over the past three weeks. |

INTERVIEWS: Caleb Porter (25:06) and Diego Valeri (1:03:13) Monday means soccer talk! Don't forget to subscribe so you never miss a show. First up, Andrew, David (Jason?) and Matt dive into the weekend action, including Atlanta United's banner homecoming at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the make-or-break homestand that figures to define their season and playoff place. It was a big win, but what on earth is wrong with FC Dallas? Plenty, it seems. More questions answers: Can Toronto FC make regular-season history AND win MLS Cup? What's the deal with the rumored Erik Palmer-Brown move? Who's the odds-on favorite to win Landon Donovan MLS MVP? Are the Montreal Impact out if after a third straight loss? How will Jordan Morris' injury affect the Sounders?
After the break, Portland head coach Caleb Porter (25:06) joins Andrew for an unfiltered interview about the state of coaching and tactics in MLS, the players and teams he respects most, the reason Portland was the right job from him and whether the pressure on the Timbers is fair or not. Stick around for a Seattle-based #Baerantee in the mailbag, then MVP candidate Diego Valeri (1:03:13) hops on for an interview you won't want to miss. |

Is the sky falling for the US national team? Short answer ... no. Long answer ... don't look up. After a near catastrophic international break for Bruce Arena and the Americans, Andrew and Matt get together to break it all down. What's up with the stinkers against Costa Rica and Honduras? What can Arena do to right the ship? Why would anyone think missing the World Cup is the answer to the USMNT's current struggles? With that out of the way, the guys tackle Atlanta United's home-heavy slate as Mercedes-Benz Arena prepares for its first MLS match. Can the FIve Stripes get enough points to keep their playoff and MLS Cup dreams alive? If they don't, how big a blow is that to their banner first season? Plus, which non-playoff team is best equipped for 2018?
After the break, Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes joins Andrew for a long, all-encompassing interview, including what makes the best defense in MLS so special, the MLS academy arms race, effect of TAM on rosters and scouting, Graham Zusi's career in KC and switch to right back and current plight of the US national team. Would Vermes consider the job? You bet, if he can bear to leave Sporting. Instead of the Hot-Take Hotline, Ike Opara and Tim Melia (Sporting KC) drop by for an off-the-cuff convo about All-Star snubs, fast cars, Vermes' health regimen and kickball games at Chivas USA. Stay tuned for lots of laughs and stories you've never heard before! |

Success or failure? In MLS, the general margins of both are determined by playoff qualification. With a little more than two months left in the MLS regular season, those margins are starting to be very thin. Andrew, David and Matt run through a busy MLS weekend attempting to answer the questions that will determine whether your club is one of the 12 who have a shot at MLS Cup. Are the Sounders the class of the weakened West or are Houston's young guns the better bet? Are LA's playoff dreams dead? Can Portland avoid disaster? Is the Shield a step too far for road-weary Chicago? Could Real Salt Lake make a miraculous run? Do Dallas have enough firepower to finally capture the silverware Oscar Pareja seeks? In the second segment, it's all US Open Cup, as the New York Red Bulls head to Cincinnati with a place in the final on the line. They do so on the back of another big win against Orlando, one that got tongues wagging as Video Review saw Kaka sent off in stoppage time. Then it's time for the Baer's Lair, where more #MLSmiddlenames are bandied about and hot takes flow like water. Want to be a part of the show? Who won the MLS summer transfer window? The guys break down all the moves after a hectic deadline day with former MLS executive and New York Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis. Who got the best of the flurry of trades that beat the close of the window? Which under-the-radar moves caught the eye? Who should have made a move and didn't? What on earth is going on with Krisztian Nemeth? You won't want to miss this episode. As far as winners go, D.C. United are an easy choice. The Black-and-Red introduced their newest crop of players on Thursday, including club record signing Paul Arriola, who cost a reported $3.5 million from Club Tijuana. General manager Dave Kasper chats with Andrew about the club's financial splash, effort to get younger and more dynamic ahead of the opening of Audi Field and ongoing contract negotiations with Bill Hamid. Two Baer's Lairs in one week? Consider it our present to you. Ben Baer jumps in for the mailbag to talk Sporting KC's US Open Cup semifinal win, the Union's lack of player movement, Minnesota's glut of wingers and banter for days. Want to be a part of the show? ExtraTime Radio driven by Continental is back in the comfy confines of the Green Room to break down MLS Week 22. The playoff races are heating up, and wasted opportunities and opportunistic results have clubs going opposite directions. New York is blue thanks to David Villa's first-ever MLS hat-trick, a disallowed Gyasi Zardes goal and LA Galaxy loss inspires a Baerantee, The Answer bites Sporting KC, Seattle puts a hurting on Minnesota (complete with Monty Python reference) and the Chicago Fire flame New England at home, their ninth straight win (!!!) at Toyota Park. All 22 teams get a once over!
In the second segment, Howard Webb, who you'll recognize as the man in the middle at the 2010 World Cup final and is now PRO's Manager of VAR Operations, joins Andrew and David to evaluate the first weekend of Video Review in MLS. Though there were more than 100 checks, only two plays were reviewed. Did the referees get them right? Were there kinks in the process? What is a clear and obvious error? How do referees define the attacking phase? All your questions (and more) answered by the man behind Video Review in MLS.
Monday means Andrew and David head to the Baer's Lair for a wild 20 minutes of MLS banter. First up, stories from the NY Derby, big news with a new addition to ETR on the way and then all your calls and texts from the weekend!

The guys are in Chicago, and they've got a doozy of a show for you ahead of the MLS All-Star Game presented by Target. First up, Sam Stejskal joins Andrew and David to preview the big game against Real Madrid, then Sporting KC's Graham Zusi and ATLUTD captain Michael Parkhurst team up for laugh-filled interview. FC Dallas' Kellyn Acosta follows that up with some honest words about his Gold Cup performance and big goals for the second half of 2017.
But will he Acosta be around to accomplish them? Stejskal got the goods on a potential transfer for the Homegrown star, and it sounds like he may be ready to leave sooner rather than later. Should FC Dallas sell? The guys dive into that topic feet first, then Greg Garza and Jelle Van Damme jump on to talk about their own careers and maybe even a potential transfer or two.
In the mailbag, Ben Baer's Baerantee is short on research, and the Hot-Take Hotline blows up with questions from around the league.

He also breaks down who helped and hurt their stock while Ben tries to just enjoy the win. In the mailbag, fans make their voices heard with some hot-take predictions about some young US stars, why CJ Sapong will lead Philadelphia to greatness and if Dom Dwyer and Cyle Larin can fit together. |

Talking All-Star snubs w/ Fire’s Paunovic, USMNT worries and MLS’s wild return + special guest Erik Palmer Brown
Between the MLS All-Star roster, another shaky US national team performance in the Gold Cup, the wacky, wild and unpredictable return of MLS and a trash-talking billboard in Orlando, there just wasn’t enough time to talk about everything. We still did, though. Hit the play button for All-Star snubs, a roster breakdown and Fire insider segment with Chicago head coach Veljko Paunovic, USMNT analysis (don’t worry, there was no biting) and a head-scratching rundown of some wild games in Cascadia on Wednesday night. Oh, and there’s a bonus segment, as Sporting KC phenom Erik Palmer-Brown joins the guys to explain why he’s a Michelle Branch fan, what it’s like to go abroad as a teenager, why Ike Opara calls him his “son” and where he contract situation stands with time ticking down on his current deal. Of course, the guys also hit the Hot-Take Hotline, which is overflowing with gold from the most important people in the ETR world … the listeners! |

The US are on the quarterfinals at the Gold Cup after a crucial 3-0 win vs. Nicaragua but just how much of a success was the group stage? Andrew, David and Ben discuss that as there's some divided opinions on Arena's decision to bring some of the longtime stalwarts. New England Revolution midfielder Kelyn Rowe also calls in to discuss his time with the team after being sent home, including what he needs to work on to return. After the break, the guys discuss the return of MLS and all the latest transfer rumors. They also interview Houston Dynamo vice president/general manager Matt Jordan after the signing of Tomas Martinez and what the Dynamo front office exec thinks about Alberth Elis' future with the club. The Baer's Lair debuts in the third segment as Ben makes his first "Baerantee" and the Hot-Take Hotline is aghast at some the decisions Arena has made so far. Your texts also make their first appearance on the show with the fans wondering who the best striker on USA is and if it's time to think about a different No. 2 goalkeeper. Want to be a part of the show? How are you feeling this morning? Are you riled up about the US national team’s skin-of-their-teeth win against Martinique? Or is it just part of the process? With Andrew back in New York – complete with a few mystery bites from Kansas wildlife – the guys break down the Gold Cup for Bruce Arena so far, the winners and losers from Wednesday night’s action, Dax McCarty’s World Cup ticket and Canada’s newest hype train. After the break, US and Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan joins David Gass to explain why now was the right time to return to MLS, how excited he is to be a part of an expansion team “doing it right” and outline the differences between Bruce Arena and Jurgen Klinsmann. In the mailbag, the guys name their midseason award winners, hear from a listener who ran into Simon Borg in the flesh and ponder whether LAFC are behind the eight ball sans coach and players with closing in on six months until 2018 preseason begins. |
Mon, 10 July 2017
A less than dominant start to the Gold Cup for the US national team leaves a lot of questions about Bruce Arena's decisions and this tournament's roster. Ben Baer and Matt Doyle join David Gass to look at all the good and bad of the US. From Kelyn Rowe's shining performance and Dom Dwyer's goalscoring streak to why Dax McCarty and Kellyn Acosta struggled to control midfield, the guys break it all down. Also, what upgrade is needed defensively and where can they find some attack from the wings? The guys also hit on Canada's big win against French Guyana and why Mexico may not be as exciting as they usually are. In the second segment, the MLS transfer window is open and the rumors are flying. The guys discuss if Seattle targeted their next Designated Player and what it could mean for Jordan Morris. Plus, are big time moves coming in LA or NY? Could there be a big center forward traded inside MLS? All that plus much more. In the mailbag the guys debate the state of the USMNT. Is this the most talented group ever? And what should expectations be at next year's World Cup? Plus who outside the playoff field is ready for a second half charge. |

The days are long and the BBQs are hot, and that means the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup is upon us. Who better to preview it all with than American soccer icon and MLS Cup champion coach Sigi Schmid. He joins Andrew and David on ExtraTime Radio Driven by Continental Tires to preview the whole tournament. What is his buddy Bruce Arena's plan for this US national team roster? Who will solidify their place in Russia? How can this team take the crown? Plus, a Canada preview for their first tournament under Octavio Zambrano and the group of young attackers under him. Of course Andrew and David wouldn't have Sigi in without asking all the burning MLS questions: What does he think of expansion darling Atlanta United? And what to make of the shift in power from Western Conference to East? Join the guys Saturday for Club & Country After The Whistle for live reaction to every USMNT match at the Gold Cup. And listen to ETR all tournament long for coverage.

It’s a holiday weekend – have fun and stay safe – but you didn’t think we’d leave you hanging after a wild weekend of MLS action, did you? Not a chance. Andrew and Bobby Warshaw jump in the blue room to break down all the Cali Clasico drama, the Chicago Fire’s incredible rise to the top of MLS, Tim Melia’s claim to the title of “Best Goalkeeper in MLS” and everything in between. After the break, Red Bulls' forward Bradley Wright-Phillips joins Andrew and David for a wide-ranging (and often hilarious) interview about the Fourth of July, packing lunches for his kids, the pressure to win MLS Cup and Game of Thrones. In the mailbag, Bobby helps Andrew take a closer look at the United States national team’s Gold Cup warmup win against Ghana. Did Dom Dwyer show enough to be the starting forward? IS Kellyn Acosta destined for greatness? Who can benefit most from a big tournament with Russia on the horizon? Want to be a part of the show? Andrew is back, and the guys waste no time putting him in his place. First, though, David and Matt help break down Toronto FC's dramatic Canadian Championship triumph against archrivals Montreal, those Wesley Sneijder-to-LAFC rumors, a changing Cali Clasico and early winners and losers from the Dax McCarty trade. There's a packed weekend of MLS action in store, but the US national team managed to jam a friendly in as well. What's Bruce Arena looking for against Ghana? What partnerships are being tested? Is Matt Hedges the key to the backline? Will it be Dom Dwyer or Juan Agudelo up top? In the second segment, it's all Lamar Hunt US Open Cup following a typically wild night of action. Poku (!!!) got the game-winner vs. Atlanta, but it was Mitch Hildebrandt who became a folk hero after saving three penalties to help FC Cincinnati knock off the Chicago Fire from the spot. He joins the guys to explain his strategy, tell stories from his not-so-wild night, explain what makes Cincinnati such a strong soccer market and look ahead to the next round (and perhaps even more glory). The mailbag starts with some news: Jesse Gonzalez's one-time switch to the US is done and dusted. So what's that mean for the national team and the FC Dallas goalkeeper? Plus, San Jose's new direction, a hot (but incorrect) take in Toronto and an "I told you so" from a long-time listener in Chicago. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |

Gold Cup Rosters, Rivalry Week Drama, SJ Coaching Changes + Canadian Championship Preview w/Kurt Larson
Wow what a weekend David brings in former MLSer Bobby Warshaw to try and make sense of it all. A great Heineken Rivalry Week with action including the Magic Unicorn in Houston, Jack Harrison slaying demons at Red Bull Arena, and Dempsey well being Dempsey would be enough. But that’s not even close to all that has happened the guys have a coaching change in San Jose, a shocking level of honesty in Philadelphia, and two 4 goal performances by Crew SC and the Fire. Plus so much more weekend action. In the second segment Bruce Arena drops his Gold Cup roster and there is a lot to dig into. The guys debate their potential breakout players, could a permanent formation change be coming, which first time call up can become a permanent fixture, will Dax lead this squad to victory? The Gold Cup is just around the corner and mlssoccer.com is your source for all the coverage. A bonus third segment has Kurt Larson of the Toronto Sun check in to preview the Canadian Championship. With TFC flying high off another good win he delves in the Toronto-Montreal rivalry, the potential CCL future of these sides, as well as Justin Morrows USMNT call up, and when USA fans can expect to see Bradley and Jozy. In the mailbag there are pyrotechnics, sad Red Bull fans, and a much more. |
Thu, 22 June 2017
David Gass brings in the stars to help preview one of the biggest weekends of the season Heineken Rivalry Week. First Calen Carr and Ben "The Research" Baer stop by to talk Houston v FC Dallas (9pm ET on UniMas & Facebook.com.) They chat about Calen's history in the rivalry but more importantly what Wilmer Cabrera and Oscar Pareja are building for the future. They also breakdown the must win Seattle-Portland Cascadia Cup match on Sunday 10pm ET (Fox & Fox Deportes). Plus they look back at a bunch of midweek action and forward to a Saturday night filled with big time MLS battles.
In the second segment Tommy McNammara and Luis Robles stop by the MLS office to preview the Hudson River Derby. McNammara talks about his national team future, NY sightseeing tips, and much more while the ironman Luis Robles takes over hosting duties from Andrew.
In the mailbag the ignorant ETR hosts FINALLY look north to the Canadian Championship, wonder what is wrong with Jordan Morris, and one caller worries Deuce could get Landon'd off next summers World Cup roster. |
Mon, 19 June 2017
The Armchair Analyst is rested and ready for his return to the ETR lineup, and just in time too because there's plenty to talk about after an MLS weekend that saw David Villa hit the 50-goal mark, Josef Martinez make a triumphant Atlanta United return and the Fire establish themselves as the only real contender to Toronto FC. Oh, and there was drama, too. It's been a tough few months for Real Salt Lake. Three points via a Yura Movsisyan goal were huge, but it was the forward's finger-to-the-lips celebration that got people talking. Was it directed toward Mike Petke? The guys break it all down, and even dive into a few transfer rumors. Are Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris actually BFFs (best friends forever)? The answer, after sitting down the pair, is a resounding yes. You won't want to miss an exclusive interview with two of MLS's top young players, in which they discuss their sleeping habits on the road (it gets a little weird), what it feels like to be an MLS Cup champion and what they do to improve every single day. And while they're teammates now with the Sounders, both hope to link up when the US national team gathers for the Gold Cup this summer. Roldan takes you inside his decision to pursue a future with the US, while Morris explains how he deals with the pressure that follows him wherever he goes. In the mailbag, it's rumor time. Would Andres Guardado be a good fit for LAFC? What about Jakub Blaszczykowski to the Fire? And could Sporting KC lose Erik Palmer-Brown after this season? Plus, an ode to Brek Shea's naming abilities. Want to share your own Father's Day stories, odes or memories? Use the comment section, email, tweet or call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |

Like any good team, squad rotation is key. So, with Matt Doyle resting his vocal chords, the guys bring super sub and ESPN extraordinaire Julie Stewart-Binks into the blue room to help reflect on the US Open Cup, MLS weekend and life on the sidelines (literally). You won't want to miss Stewart-Binks' stories from on the road and behind the scenes around MLS. In honor of Father's Day – make sure to call your dad this weekend, or better yet catch some MLS action together – Andrew and David chat with LA Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes, who has two children of his own. Listen to Zardes explain how he balances work with fatherhood and describe how his own father set him up for success, both as a player and a man. Want to share your own Father's Day stories, odes or memories? Use the comment section, email, tweet or call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |

The US national is back in the drivers seat under Bruce Arena. The guys convene to gush about the last weekend for the national team in CONCACAF qualifying. Where does Bradley's goal rank in US Soccer history, how did Bruce pull the right strings? What has changed in the national team over the last 6 months? All this and much more.
In the second segment the guys talk to a one of the stars of the U20 World Cup Tyler Adams about his young career, going to prom as a soccer star, learning under Bradley Wright-Philips, and more.
In the mailbag as good as the US National Team has played there are still 40 players looking to make the gold cup. |

United States-Mexico is arguably the biggest rivalry in international soccer, an occasion that's far bigger than one game or the sport itself. For millions, it's a balancing act between two cultures, an identity exercise felt acutely by players on both sides of the rivalry. Ahead of the USMNT's trip to Estadio Azteca, ETR brings you exclusive interviews with US centerback Omar Gonzalez, former US forward Herculez Gomez and Mexico goalkeeper Moises Munoz as they detail their own experiences straddling both sides of the divide. Union forward Charlie Davies also calls in to tell the story of the famous goal he scored in 2009, and US supporter Brent Gamit explains what it's like to root for the away team at one of the most intimidating venues in the world ahead of his fourth trip to Estadio Azteca. |

It's a massive week for the US national team, and Andrew, David and Matt are here to make sure you don't miss a thing. Thus the early edition of ExtraTime Radio this week, with a complete preview of the Thursday's must-win World Cup qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago. Check back later for an extra special US-Mexico show featuring interviews with Omar Gonzalez, Herculez Gomez, Moises Munoz, Charlie Davies and others! How much do you know about the Soca Warriors? Probably not as much as T&T journalist Lasana Liburd, who explains why Cordell Cato was sent home and discipline appears to be an ongoing issue for the team currently last in the Hex. Plus, Kevin Molino's special place among Trinidad fans, Kenwyne Jones' goal drought at the international level and new head coach Dennis Lawrence's plan for his first road game. It's not all US, though, as fans north of the border got some good news this week when teenage phenom Alphonso Davies committed his international future to Canada. Journalist Daniel Squizzato joins the show to explain what it means for the Canadian program and what impact we should expect from the young Whitecaps attacker. In the mailbag, a listener questions the importance of the Gold Cup, especially when his MLS team suffers, and another wonders how he might be able to impress his friends at the bar without sounds too smart for his own good. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |

Not many nicknames stick like Sueño stuck to Jorge Villafaña, but those days are over for the Santos Laguna and US national team left back. He’s an established pro now, an MLS Cup winner and subject of a seven-figure transfer fee from Liga MX club Santos Laguna. In fact, this could be the biggest week of Villafaña’s career, as the US take on Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico in Hexagonal matches that could determine whether the Americans book a trip to Russia. The guys link up with Villafaña for a 1v1 interview you won’t want to miss, then break down the US’s warmup draw with Venezuela, Bruce Arena’s 40-man preliminary roster for the Gold Cup and the U-20’s loss in the World Cup quarterfinals. There’s plenty to talk about in Major League Soccer as well. Jesus scores! Jesus Ferreira, of course. The 16-year-old FC Dallas Homegrown and son of former MLS MVP David Ferreira wasted no time in his debut making history, so what’s next for the young winger? What’s next for Real Salt Lake and Mike Petke after the latter called out his team for another appalling performance? That’s not all, as the guys parse Pablo Mastroeni’s stats vs. heart comments and give Will Bruin a pass for celebrating against his former team. In the mailbag, a listener suggests a three-man backline for the US ahead of Russia 2018, another castigates the guys for not giving Seattle-Portland in the Open Cup more love and an emailer questions Michael Bradley’s place in the MLS and US pecking order. |
Thu, 1 June 2017
A World Cup knockout run by the United States in South Korea? We've seen that before. This time, though, it's the US U-20s doing the damage, as a parade of MLSers helped Tab Ramos' team advance to the quarterfinals thanks to a 6-0 victory against New Zealand on Wednesday morning. Renaissance man and Top Drawer Soccer' Will Parchman joins the guys to praise Tab Ramos, marvel at Tyler Adams' eye-popping play and look ahead to a massive match against NYCFC's Yangel Herrera and Venezuela. The second segment is all about the underdog, the soccer David attempting to slay another Goliath. Christos FC are sponsored by a liquor store. Their real jobs come before training. They're on the verge of shocking the world – if they haven't already. Christos FC are the final amateur side remaining in the US Open Cup and booked a Fourth Round date with D.C. United after a big win on Wednesday. Shawn Smith helped found the club two decades ago and calls in to tell their incredible story. Can they knock off the big boys? You've just got to believe. In the mailbag, the guys rank bar games, wonder why Seattle and Portland fans are looking for plaudits while their teams struggle, debate Hernan Grana's defensive prowess and update everyone on MLS All-Star Fan XI voting (hint: ATLUTD fans are stuffing the ballot box). Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |

Bruce Arena named the US national team roster for massive Hexagonal matches, and the guys have trouble finding fault with the group. Let's just say it hasn't always been that way in the last few years. Still, Arena has a decision to make: Where and when does he deploy his best resources considering Trinidad & Tobago is a must-win and Azteca is a dragon the Americans have yet to slay? Plus, the US U-20s head to the World Cup Round of 16 and Octavio Zambrano and Canada prepare for the Gold Cup. We're almost three months into the 2017 season, and it's time to take stock of the best and brightest in MLS. Yes, that means 2017 MLS All-Star Fan XI presented by Target voting is open. Cast your ballot via the MLS app while you listen to the guys reveal their own choices. Some picks are obvious, but others get the guys heated. Everybody is happy, though, about Mauro Diaz's return, Julian Gressel's outstanding rookie season and the LA Galaxy's flip-flopping form. Plus, what's wrong with the Timbers? In the mailbag, Doyle tackles whether Kaka and the diamond are working in Orlando, and the Rapids Rabbi offers his take on a thus-far disappointing season in Colorado. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |

It was hard to miss David Beckham's name on U.S. Soccer's list of Hall of Fame nominees. But does he belong? With Dave hanging out in the UK, Andrew and Doyle grapple with the international superstar's place in the HoF, and it's not cut and dry. Beckham's case might surprise you. Then it's on to a rivalry heavy weekend featuring Toronto FC sans Jozy and Seba, a Cascadia clash complete with timber-related trash talk and a tough choice for Oscar Pareja and FC Dallas. Plus, a closer look at Patrick Vieira's rapidly rising coaching career After the break, Andrew gives MLS and San Jose legend Chris Wondolowski a call to reminisce about the Cali Clasico. The 75th edition will go down on Saturday night in NorCal, and Wondo was a San Jose Clash then Earthquakes fan from the start. Go down memory lane as MLS's fourth all-time leading scorer tells stories about Landon Donovan's place as Judas in Quakes lore, wrestling matches between the Bash Brothers and so much more! In the mailbag, Doyle assesses the US U-20's World Cup so far and takes a crack at predicting Bruce Arena's US roster for upcoming World Cup qualifiers before a emailer compares FC Dallas and Ajax in the wake of the Europa League final. Golazos? Check. Streaks ending and beginning? You bet. A little controversy? Sure, why not? MLS had it all this weekend, and the guys (with Ben 'The Research' Baer filling in for Dave) break it all down. From Toronto FC coming up just short at Red Bull Arena to New York City FC getting revenge on Orlando City, there's more than enough talking points to keep your attention on soccer for nearly an hour. It's not just MLS on the docket, either, as the US U-20s had a dramatic moment in stoppage time to thank for huge point to start the U-20 World Cup in South Korea. They might have won, too, if not for a bit of an uneven performance in goal and on the backline, including a forgettable moment by a name you may be familiar with. Stay tuned for an exclusive interview with CONCACAF General Secretary Philippe Moggio and a Hot-Take Hotline call from a plucky grade schooler. Want to be a part of the show? Days after Jelle Van Damme went 1v1 with ExtraTime Radio, Toronto FC and US national team captain Michael Bradley did the same, camping out for 45 minutes to give you the background on that famous US-Mexico photo in Columbus, Christian Pulisic's bright future, Toronto FC's historic winning streak, his father's future (and his own) in coaching and the sport of Fierljeppen (look it up). Have time to kill at work? Maybe a long drive coming up? We've got you covered with nearly two hours of soccer talk, including an exclusive interview with LA Galaxy defender Jelle Van Damme. But first, the long and the short from an awesome Week 11, including Toronto FC's historic winning streak, a throwback night in Chicago, hambones for the Union and Revs and a big win thousands of miles from home for the LA Galaxy. Ben 'The Research' Baer, aka the King of Takes, jumps on as well to give you insight into Justin Meram's big season with Crew SC and Cyle Larin's Chicharito-like shot efficiency before Evan Ream (Davis Enterprise) gives the guys an update on MLS expansion in Sacramento. Once that's out of the way, it's time to sit down for a long chat with the big Belgian, who takes Andrew and Dave through his career in Europe, including at Ajax with none other than Zlatan, and his life in Southern California. Oh, and you better believe we asked Van Damme about getting the first-half hook against the Fire. Settle in for a fun interview before the Hot-Take Hotline takes you home! Unless you've been under an MLS rock, you know Toronto FC are stacked – even when Sebastian Giovinco isn't around. You also know the ExtraTime Radio guys are obsessed with Raheem Edwards and Victor Vazquez. No surprise then that the duo helped the Reds to a big midweek win. The guys break that down, then shift their attention to a weekend full of must-watch games on national television, bringing in Dan Gargan to help explain what makes Atlanta United special and what's going on with the Galaxy. After the break, it's time to evaluate a quiet deadline day for MLS clubs. Even though there were only a handful of moves made, there will be a couple game-changers entering the league in May. Once that's out of the way, it's time to dream about the summer! Marca's Arch Bell calls in to offer up his top five MLS targets in Central America. You'll want to write these names down. Finally, in the mailbag, the guys reminisce about the MLS teams that they loved before they worked in soccer, David's "Are you watching the game? Or just looking at the stats?" tagline sneaks into a classroom and Doyle explains why the MLS foreign coaching cliches were always wrong. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio! |
Mon, 8 May 2017
After another wild MLS weekend, Andrew, David and Matt sit down to digest Minnesota's eye-opening performance against Sporting KC on national television, Atlanta's humbling loss in the Bronx to an NYCFC squad making waves and a Doop-tastic win for the Union that ended a run of 252 days without a win. Meanwhile, Chris Wondolowski is thriving with a little freedom to roam in San Jose – and Andrew says he will own the MLS scoring title sooner rather than later – the Houston Dynamo are the most entertaining team in MLS and uber-talented Toronto FC ought to be disappointed with anything less than a double. Plus, Curt Onalfo made one of the gutsiest substitutions in MLS history ... will it pay off for the LA Galaxy boss? Want to be a part of the show? If you were watching the games – feel free to fill in the rest on your own – last weekend, you know all about Will Bruin's meme-worthy, two-thumbs up moment. With an MLS Cup rematch on the cards, the guys dial up the Dancing Bear to chat about his new digs in Seattle, the best lock-room characters he's been around and the strikers in MLS he admires. |

Is the ETR curse real? Plus, Seattle fights back, Dax returns to NY, Jozy dominates and the Hot-Take Hotline delights
Is the ETR curse real? You'll get no confirmation from us, but Michael Parkhurst did score an own goal in Atlanta's 3-1 loss on Sunday after appearing on the show, so make of that what you will. If you're looking for a unique perspective on the Battle of the Uniteds, FS1's Katie Withamcalls in to explain what it's like to watch the game from the sideline, how the atmosphere in Atlanta has improved in a matter of weeks and why Ben Olsen can identify with Lucho Acosta.
The guys also put a bow on the weekend, starting with Dax McCarty's return to New York, Seattle's epic comeback from 3-0 down against New England, Jozy Altidore's big game against the Dynamo, Sporting KC's claim to the "Best Team in MLS" title and Orlando's impregnable fortress. Plus, what's the best attacking tandem in MLS? And which under-the-radar signing this offseason gets the guys stamp of approval?
Last, but not least, the Hot-Take Hotline brings the heat. That's a good think since Ben Baer, otherwise known as the King of Takes, joins to make sure listeners aren't coming lukewarm. Stick around for voicemails berating Dave for his Broadway knowledge, missives from the "Garbage Bowl," Rapids Rabbi standing by his boys and more Portland trolling.

Behind the scenes in ATL w/ Michael Parkhurst, Dax’s return to NYC, Manneh drama in CLB and Alexi Lalas’ Hot-Take Hotline jingle
Are you watching the games or just looking at the stats? David's catchphrase is taking off! The guys are definitely talking about (and watching) the games, starting with Friday night lights in Toronto where the best player in the league – Alberth Elis, duh ;) – is hoping to put on a show against the upstart Dynamo. Yes, that'd be Sebastian Giovinco, who Atlanta United captain Michael Parkhurst gives the nod as MLS's best. Who else does Parkhurst hating matching up against? What's life like with an expansion team firing on all cylinders on and off the field? Just how cushy is that new training complex? You won't want to miss this all-encompassing interview from ATL. There are plenty more juicy MLS storylines to talk about, too. The guys start with Dax McCarty's return to Red Bull Arena, celebrate Mauro Diaz's cameo on the training field and Portland's proposed stadium expansion, wonder what's up in Columbus as Gregg Berhalter and Kekuta Manneh go back and forth in the media and finally call the LA Times Kevin Baxter to diagnose what ails the Galaxy. As always, the Hot-Take Hotline is chock full of gems, starting with a jingle from none other than Alexi Lalas. There are more jingles where that came from, a Joe Bendik-to-USMNT flame job, LA Galaxy gritching and some insight into Dax's return from Bill Carroll in Section 132. Want to be a part of the show? Forget Race to Seis, the Galaxy are just racing to keep the 2017 season alive after a slow start that has them at the bottom of the Western Conference. With Andrew back from gallivanting around Mexico, the guys dive into the weekend action, starting with a Sounders blowout at StubHub Center that has LA fans worried and Seattle thinking big. Orlando City have The Wall dreaming big as well after Cyle Larin led the Lions to yet another victory, their first on the road and league-leading fifth of the season, against Jason Kreis' former employers. Plus, the Union's misery continues after blowing a three-goal lead, Toronto FC spoils Bastian Schweinsteiger's party, Portland rule Cascadia thanks to Darlington Nagbe's swag, Kekuta Manneh cryptic tweet raises eyebrows and Atlanta United hand Mike Petke and Real Salt Lake a loss that has Nick Rimando under the microscope. In the second segment, the guys get jacked about the variety and quality of this season's Golden Boot contenders, then get Kevin Kinkead (Philly Voice) on the line to diagnose the ailing Union, who haven't won in eight months. That's not all, either, as supporters call in from the stands to make the Hot-Take Hotline even more special (or ridiculous). Want to be a part of the show? An all-star episode of ETR heading into a weekend filled with exciting games. Calen Carr joins David and Matt to preview it all as several teams enter high stakes matches. Can Bastian Schweinsteiger & Co. do it on the road in Toronto? Who is the most exciting player on Atlanta? Can FC Dallas break through the impenetrable SKC defense? And of course Calen and Doyle’s favorite topic, the Canadian wonder that is Cyle Larin. All this and more, plus an interview with Mexican national team head coach Juan Carlos Osorio. The former Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls manager talks all about the USA-Mexico rivalry, the fight for dual nationals, how his time in MLS shaped him as a manager, and the future of the league. |

After an exciting weekend of MLS action and with the big announcement that Real Madrid will be the MLS All-Star’s opponent the guys are raring and ready to go. David and Ben are back from Dallas and join up with Matt to break down all the big performances in MLS from David Villa’s GOY at Philly, to Orlando’s dominant home form, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s undefeated MLS streak, and everything in between. In the second segment Ben Baer sits down field side in Frisco at the Generation adidas Cup with Real Madrid legend Raúl. They talk about MLS and La Liga’s growing partnership, developing young talent and of course the MLS All-Star game presented by Target on August 2 at 9 pm ET (FS1, UniMás in US | TSN TVA Sports in Canada). In the mailbag the Hot-Take Hotline is ringing off the hook fans call in to try and solve Houston’s glut of young attacking talent, bring the heat with Colorado Rapids takes, call in from Red Bull Arena section 132 and much more. Dave is down at GA Cup, where the best youth players in the country are battling international competition for bragging rights. He sits down with MLS youth technical director Fred Lipka and ATL UTD academy director Tony Annan to discuss how the US and Canada are trying to produce the next big star from the ground up. With David at GA Cup, Andrew and Matt tackle MLS Week 7 alone. Are Gyasi Zardes and Giovani dos Santos primed to explode? Are the Union in a tailspin? Should Pirlo ride the bench? Why is Bobby Boswell so important to D.C. United's success? Plus, your MLS LIVE game of the week goes down in Houston, and Timbers troll is gonna troll. Speaking of trolls, the Hot-Take Hotline is a hit, and you won't want to miss the latest crop of voicemails.

It's official! The United States, Canada and Mexico are joining forces to bring the World Cup back to CONCACAF, making their pitch for 2026 official on Monday at a press conference in New York City. The guys walk you through all the details (31:02), then give their takes on what would be an incredible event. Plus, everything you need to know about MLS Week 6 and David Beckham stories with former MLS MVP Mike Magee (47:45) |
Thu, 6 April 2017
Another year, another CONCACAF Champions League trophy that won't be lifted by an MLS team. Those dreams died on Tuesday and Wednesday as FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps succumbed to Liga MX competition in a trend that American and Canadian clubs just can't seem to break. So what should we take away from this year's CCL disappointment? What does it mean for the future? Where did FC Dallas fall short in Pachuca? Why prevented the 'Caps from slaying a giant in Tigres? Andrew, David and Matt try to answer those questions then turn to more positive news in the region as all signs to a US, Canada and Mexico joint bid for the 2026 World Cup! After the break, it's all MLS as Week 6 approaches. Are the Galaxy in trouble or is this just a case of early season yips and the injury bug? Can Bastian Schweinsteiger shine in a tough test for the Fire? Should Jim Curtin be on the hot seat in Philly? Why is Sebastian Giovinco still looking for his first goal or assist in 2017? How will Real Salt Lake change under Mike Petke? What level of player are Orlando City getting in Luis Gil, back in MLS on loan for the season? Finally, Fredy Montero calls in from Vancouver to talk CCL, China, Cascadia bad blood and why he hopes 2017 will be his best year yet. In the mailbag, listeners flood the Hot-Take Hotline with a new jingle, a question about the next generation of USMNT goalkeepers and a dispute about the best MLS team of all-time. Block out some time because there's more than an hour of soccer talk coming your way after an entertaining MLS weekend saw Bastian Schweinsteiger score on his debut, Minnesota United finally get on the good side of a blowout and Cubo Torres break out the robot (again). As always, give us your takes by calling the Hot-Take Hotline or emailing the show!
There's plenty to look forward to this week as well, as the CONCACAF Champions League returns with semifinal second legs that could see two (or zero) MLS teams advance to the final. Goal.com's Jon Arnold joins the guys from a bus on the way to Pachuca, where FC Dallas will attempt to protect their 2-1 series lead against Los Tuzos. Do they have a chance of bucking the odds and knocking off their Omar Gonzalez and the Liga MX powers? Yes, but it won't be easy, Arnold says. On the flipside, the Vancouver Whitecaps have a mountain to climb against Tigres down 2-0 after the first leg. Can Carl Robinson inspire his boys to a famous victory?
Bonus segment! Don't say we never gave you anything. Arielle Castillo joins Andrew for an entertaining sitdown with San Jose Earthquakes Homegrowns Nick Lima and Tommy Thompson. Yes, the hype train is real. Yes, Wondo is Lima's favorite player. Yes, you'll want to listen to this one.
In the mailbag, the Hot-Time Hotline returns with a 'Caps fan claiming Vancouver got the better of Crew SC in that Kekuta Manneh-Tony Tchani deal, and another listener giving Dave an excuse to play show tunes. Typical.

The MLS news machine never stops! After listening to the first-ever Hot-Take Hotline submission, the guys dive into Mike Petke's appointment as the fourth head coach in Real Salt Lake history, discuss the long-term implications of Oscar Pareja's contract extension in Dallas and then ponder how exactly the Chicago Fire might qualify for the World Cup. Confused? So was Bastian Schweinsteiger. There's plenty of weekend action to break down as well. You won't want to miss a marquee matchup between Seattle and Atlanta on a rare Friday night MLS doubleheader. After the break, those pesky transfer rumors around Cyle Larin just won't go away. Doyle gives his take on the young striker's future, then veteran defender Jonathan Spector calls in to give Larin his vote of confidence, explain why moving to MLS now made sense and what it's like to make the move to Manchester United at 17 years of age. Spector is also high on Christian Pulisic (duh) and says he'd love to get his national career going again under Bruce Arena. Speaking of, the US got a 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Panama City, and David takes Andrew to task for expecting more. Doyle also got taken to task ... on Twitter ... by Jermaine Jones ... and shares the full story and the opinion that annoyed the LA Galaxy man. In the mailbag, there's breaking news as the Whitecaps trade Kekuta Manneh to Columbus for Tony Tchani and an allocation money grab bag. What's going on with Vancouver? How does affect the Crew SC XI ... and could there be another trade in the works? Once that's out of the way, the guys listen to the inaugural crop of Hot-Take Hotline voicemails. You won't want to miss history being made! Want to be a part of the show? Everyone wants to talk about the US national team's big win, but first Ben 'The Research' Baer steps into the starting lineup to drop some knowledge that's downright painful for Minnesota United fans. It may have been a truncated MLS weekend, but there are still plenty of takes (hot, lukewarm and cold) to be had. Are the Loons really in contention to set records for futility or will this trend reverse? Is Pipa Higuain back to his best or was that a beautiful mirage against the Timbers? Is Tyler Adams the next coming?
Breathing easier this week? That might just be because the USMNT shook off months of uncertainty and worry after disposing of Honduras 6-0 at Avaya Stadium. As many tweeted at ExtraTime Radio, a hat-trick for Deuce -- and yes, we were watching the game and not just looking at the stats -- and some special moments from Christian Pulisic and Jozy Altidore, among others, got Bruce Arena and the boys back on the track. With Clint Dempsey bearing down on Landon Donovan's goal record, the guys wonder if there's a new all-time USMNT best soon to be crowned. Plus, how much can we really take away from such a lopsided result? The first chance to find out whether the Americans have turned a page comes Tuesday against Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernandez (10 pm ET; beINSPORTS, Follow on the MLS App). David Sakata of Diario Pro joins the guys to explain why Graham Zusi is known as the ghost in Panama, what happened to Los Canaleros in Trinidad and how they'll attempt to grab a huge three points at home against a CONCACAF giant. In the mailbag, the ETR curse is back (and may be Wiebe's fault), the guys debate Atlanta's effect on MLS, Ben wonders if the Red Bulls will stick with the 4-2-2-2 long term and David claims the Tyler Adams hype train for himself.

Are you excited or nervous (or both) for the US national team’s Hex must-win on Friday against Honduras? To help you get through the week, the guys put together a comprehensive preview that includes interviews with Sebastian Lletget and Diario La Prensa’s US correspondent Eduardo Solano. But first there’s plenty of MLS news to cover, including Bastian Schweinsteiger’s arrival in Chicago, where the Fire hope he’ll help usher in a new era in club history. That’s not all, either, as Jeff Cassar became the first head coach to lose his job in 2017. What will Real Salt Lake do next? That’s still a bit of a mystery, but there are hints. Once that’s out of the way, Solano calls in to give an insider look at Los Catrachos, offer perspective on the changing profile of MLS in Honduras and make a prediction that might worry USMNT fans. Don’t worry, Lletget’s up next and Da Boy gets on the horn to give the American side of the story ahead of his first World Cup Qualifier and talk LA Galaxy and his position of choice. That’s all well and good, but what Andrew and David are really interested in is the new Power Rangers movie and Becky G’s role in it. In the mailbag, listeners offer up potential soccer rule changes, the guys try to help get an MLS watch party in Korea off the ground and an RSL fan offers up four-pages of complaints. |

Goals, goals, goals. Oh, and a howler of epic proportions. If you averted your eyes this weekend in MLS, you most definitely missed something. Let the ETR crew catch you up, starting with an almost impossible question: If you could only watch one team the rest of the year, which would it be? Some say Portland (three wins in three games), others might go with Seattle (MLS Cup defense + scary attack), and if you're really brave, you might opt for Houston (La Pantera!) or Minnesota (someone is going to score goals). You'll have to listen to see who the guys went with. Let us know who you'd go with in the comment section below! Also of note, big days from No. 9s. Josef Martinez had yet another big day for Atlanta United, Cyle Larin keeps scoring at home, Fanendo Adi is a bull in the box and Jozy Altidore closes the door in Vancouver. So who's the best finisher in MLS? Once again, opinions are split. Same when it comes to the US national team, where there are changes galore ahead of a must-win Hexagonal matchup with Honduras. Plus, tune in for a wildly entertaining interview with Brian Dunseth and a mailbag with hot, lukewarm and cold takes from you, the listeners! |
Thu, 16 March 2017
First things first, have you taken the pledge? Don't Cross the Line may be a slogan, but it's also a way of life, so join the ExtraTime Radio crew in standing against discrimination of any kind. It's the right thing to do. Kellyn Acosta knows something about the right thing to do, if that thing is banging in Beckham-esque free kicks in CONCACAF Champions League semifinals. Yeah, it was dope. Yeah, FC Dallas knocked off Pachuca. Yeah, they've still got a lot of work to do before we're talking CCL Final. Vancouver's situation isn't so positive, down 2-0 to Tigres, but they're headed back to Canada for the second leg, so who knows? Once that's out of the way, the guys turn their attention to MLS, where some would prefer the takes stay lukewarm until summer. The US national have a must-win game (serious understatement) coming up against Honduras, and now we know the roster Bruce Arena will choose from to select the 11 players best suited for the job. Matt breaks down a confounding and encouraging group -- yes, that's possible -- then Chicago Fire midfielder Dax McCarty joins the guys to talk about his place on the team, his transition to life in Chicago and the beast that is Tyler Adams. In the mailbag, a shout out to a listener making his way through Southeast Asia (but still listening to the show), more Acosta talk (not our fault, we're jacked) and a scouting report on the coach linked with the Canadian national team. |
Mon, 13 March 2017
Now that MLS is back, Mondays just got a whole lot better. The guys gather to break down the Round 2 results, starting with a frigid first-ever game in Minnesota that saw the Loons lose 6-1 to a rampant Atlanta United side under a blanked of snow. So what has to change? First things first, the defense, says Doyle, while David likes the look of the Josef Martinez-Miguel Almiron one-two punch up top for ATL. Meanwhile, Andrew is jumping on the Houston Dynamo bandwagon, San Jose get some love (with a caveat), Luis Robles is the new MLS iron man, the Galaxy lose again in a bizarre match at the StubHub Center and Ben 'The Research' Baer gets his own segment. Itwasn't just about the games this weekend, either. There was some drama, featuring a Twitter back-and-forth between Alejandro Bedoya and Jozy Altidore. |
Thu, 9 March 2017
Superman on ExtraTime Radio? That’s something you’ve got to hear. Soccer is back – that has a nice ring to it – so Andrew and David sit down with a few MLS players to take the temperature of the league. First up, though, the guys dare to Zlatan, with rumors flying that the Manchester United star could be on his way to the LA Galaxy in the summer. They also look ahead to a weekend filled with big matches, from Sporting hosting FC Dallas, a Toronto-Philadelphia playoff rematch and hype trains making stops coast to coast. After the break, Minnesota United striker Christian Ramirez, who scored the club’s first MLS goal, calls in after a team breakfast to shoot the breeze for more than half an hour. Ramirez describes his stop-start path through college and then up the pro ranks, how he almost ended up playing in Mexico this season, his superhero friendship with Migeul Ibarra (who was spying the whole time), and how wild (and maybe a little weird) TCF Bank Stadium is going to be on Sunday vs Atlanta (5 pm ET; ESPN2 in the US, MLS LIVE in Canada). No mailbag on this day, as the guys leave their cozy studio space to head to New York City FC media day, where they sit down for a chat with Jack Harrison and Rodney Wallace. Wallace gets things started by interviewing Harrison about the season, then they move on to the Costa Rican’s time in Brazil, Frank Lampard and much more. |
Mon, 6 March 2017
MLS is back – no more previews, just the real thing – and the guys jam into one room to break down the Week 1 action. And there was no bigger story than firsts for Minnesota United and Atlanta United, each of which had their party spoiled in very different ways. The Loons absorbed a 5-1 loss in Portland on opening night, but is that really indicative of who'll they'll be in 2017? Meanwhile, Atlanta were Twitter darlings for 75 minutes ... then the Red Bulls reminded them that winning in MLS won't be some easy feat. Jason Kreis knows a little something about tough expansion seasons, and while he was glad to open Orlando City's sparking new stadium with a win, the Lions boss probably lost sleep over an injury to Kaka that will keep the Brazilian out for six weeks. Can his teammates pick up the slack? It's going to be tough, that's for sure. Any game against FC Dallas is tough, which the LA Galaxy now know from experience after Kellyn Acosta's star continued it's steady rise with a game-winner at StubHub Center. There's plenty more to chew on from Week 1, too. Should Houston be at the top of your MLS LIVE rankings? Are the Rapids MLS's answer to the binary code? Why aren't you on the Alphonso Davies hype train? |
Fri, 3 March 2017
The whole crew gets together one last time before #MLSisback to make are the normal and crazy predictions they can. Andrew, David, and The Research Baer are joined in studio by Matt to go from Rookie of the Year to MLS Cup predictions and everything in between. Who has the best shot at a treble? The leading USA soccer goal scorer on the year? Who will be the 2017 stepover king and so much more!

Thu, 2 March 2017
Just hours ahead of the start of the 2017 MLS season, the guys are back to bring you the second half of their season preview. The Western Conference has won 11 of the last 13 MLS Cups, and with powers such as FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders chasing silverware, 12 of 14 seems possible. Can Albert Rusnak pick up where Javier Morales left off at Real Salt Lake? Has Vancouver finally found their striker? And will Giovani dos Santos be able to lead LA past the Bruce Arena era? The guys then get on the horn with Herculez Gomez to talk about his new career as a broadcaster at ESPN, preview the MLS season, talk all-time great MLS teams, and compare Liga MX to MLS. |
Wed, 1 March 2017
Professional Referee Organization (PRO) general manager Peter Walton and 2016 MLS Referee of the Year Alan Kelly know thousands of armchair officials are inspecting their work closely every weekend. So what do they do to make sure they get the big calls right and let the players decide the result? More than you probably know. As the ETR Extravaganza continues, don't miss our referee special as Walton explains what his crews will focus on in 2017 and Kelly explains what it's like to be the man in the middle. |

In the third segment Jesse Marsch stops by to preview CCL, the 2017 season, discuss the NY Red Bulls offseason, and more, Check out ETR all week with specials and previews leading up to Portland and Minnesota Friday night on Fox Sports 1. |
Thu, 23 February 2017
What’s soccer without supporters? Very little, if you ask us. That’s why, on the eve of the 2017 MLS season, the ExtraTime crew reached out to five folks with skin the game to help preview what’s to come on the field and in the stands. First up, expansion check-ins with Minnesota United FC and Atlanta United. Bruce McGuire calls in from the Twin Cities to provide some much-needed insight into the culture of the club and its supporters, then Terminus Legion Outreach Coordinator Andrea Bustamante explains what it’s like to start from scratch and what will make Atlanta a unique market in MLS. After the break, Ruckus president Jerry Updike is jacked about Orlando City’s new stadium and literal wall of support as well as a new opportunity to grow the purple army that’s followed the club from USL to MLS. Mike Coleman knows a thing or two about armies. Coleman leads tifo creation and execution for the Timbers Army, and he shares some tricks of the trade (without giving anything away!) for those who admire or might try to replicate what they see at Providence Park. Last but certainly not least, MLS original and New York Red Bulls supporter/reporter Mark Fishkin shares the ups and downs that come with being there from the very beginning!

After a long weekend, the guys are back at it sans Matt Doyle, who may never come back from Mexico. Know what’s also back? The CONCACAF Champions League. Do you have CCL Fever? Are there varying degrees of regional soccer anticipation? David’s not sure Andrew’s temperature is high enough as the Red Bulls and Whitecaps clash and FC Dallas take on Arabe Unido this week. What makes the tournament special? Who has an edge? Get caught up before quarterfinal first legs on Wednesday and Thursday. In other news, Tommy Thompson’s backheel goal gets the hype train back on the tracks, but the guys want to know what other MLS hype trains are primed and ready to leave the station. Alphonso Davies, anyone? Plus, Toronto FC use TAM to sign an attacking midfielder who could get them over the MLS Cup hump, Adrian Heath says Kevin ‘Hot Boy’ Molino could be the league’s best player and David Villa gets slap happy. In the second segment, Timbers coach Caleb Porter joins the guys for a must-listen interview that dives deep into MLS’s tactical identity. Listen as the Portland boss details his plans for 2017 and explains what makes a successful MLS team. There’s plenty more, too. What’s the best way to teach tactics to pros and youth players alike? What’s holding the league back in CCL? How has TAM affected rosters? What the next phase in his own coaching career? In the mailbag, Andrew tells tales from his Minnesota trip, including a shout out to a young listener, a Soccer Tour helper asks for advice on convincing his wife to open their home to a soccer vagabond and a serviceman emails with a touching story about how soccer brought people together on the other side of the globe. |

On Monday, the guys talked Homegrown players and MLS academies. This time around, they’re tackling star power, the big names who garner Designated Player contracts as well as the increasing crew of TAM players raising the level of the league. Fredy Montero is certainly a star, and Ben ‘The Research’ Baer joins to break down the stats behind the Whitecaps much-needed forward signing. Plus, Red Bulls banter after the club parts ways with Ali Curtis, and intel on NYCFC’s new DP. Alexi Lalas knows a thing or two about Designated Players. Now coming live and direct to your living room on Fox Sports, Lalas was LA Galaxy GM when they signed none other than David Beckham. How’d that deal go down? How did it change MLS? What is it’s legacy? What’s the state of star power in the league today? You’ll want to hear what Lalas has to say. In the mailbag, the Union are looking for a Chief Tattoo Officer, Brad Evans is stoking rivalry flames in Cascadia, more MLS bucket lists and an ode to MLS LIVE in which one listener calls Andrew a big fat liar. |

Eight months, 35 games, 20,000 miles. It’s the ultimate soccer road trip, and Steve Bernasconi is just crazy enough to take it on. The 25-year-old will start Feb. 25 in Tampa, Fla., and end Oct. 15 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. But how is he pulling this off? Why is he doing it in the first place? ExtraTime Radio got the intrepid soccer fan on the phone to find out what The Soccer Tour is all about and how you can be a part of it when Bernasconi comes through your city! |

We know it's hard to wait for the 2017 MLS season. That's why we put together a 10-show run to take you throw March 3, including another ExtraTime Extravaganza leading up to Opening Weekend. Might as well just subscribe on iTunes now. First up, a show devoted to Homegrowns and the academy system, the conveyor belt of talent that clubs (and the US and Canadian national teams) hope will sustain them long term. Matt Doyle gives his thoughts on the 2017 Homegrown class, then Sporting KC academy director Jon Parry joins Andrew and David to explain why producing talent from within is so important. And while the "why" is crucial to the process, it's all about the "how" when it comes to producing future pros, and Parry goes deep to help listeners understand what SKC are doing to seed their first team with local (and recruited) talent. FC Dallas and USMNT midfielder Kellyn Acosta is a Homegrown success story, and he calls in from preseason camp in Argentina to tell his own story -- from the U13s to the first team. When and why did he join the academy? How did FC Dallas help him make the jump from grassroots to the pros? What's next for one of the most talented young players in the league? MLSsoccer.com and iTunes listeners get the full story!
In the mailbag, the guys decide the fandom of an unborn child and discuss (then cross an entry off of) a rather creative MLS bucket list. |
